The Dachshund

Affectionately known as the "wiener dog," they are a small but sturdy breed with a long body, short legs, and a bold personality. Originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers, they are courageous, intelligent, and full of energy. Dachshunds come in two sizes—Standard & Miniature— and three coat types—Smooth, Longhaired, and Wirehaired. They also come in a variety of colors and patterns. Despite their small size, they have a big-dog attitude, making them both loyal companions and vigilant watchdogs. Dachshunds do enjoy voicing their opinions!

Playful and affectionate, Doxies thrive as part of the family, but their independent streak means early training and socialization are essential. They are also prone to separation anxiety and do best in homes where they have plenty of companionship, especially from another dog. I always say they do better in pairs. Thanks to their small size and adaptable nature, they make excellent compact travel companions, happy to accompany their humans on adventures.

However, potty training a Dachshund can be a challenge, in part due to their intelligence. If the weather isn’t to their liking, they will use their cleverness to avoid going outside. You can often see them contemplating how they might get away with not pooping in the rain today—and sometimes, they succeed! Consistent routine, and rewarding success is the key!
