Grooming Day

Since the monsoon in west Michigan has now passed, it’s the perfect time for a serious summer grooming session!

I went shopping during monsoon season and bought a new brand of shampoo after many years of using the same old thing. Tropiclean came highly recommended in a Dachshund group and I can now agree with their reviews. I also finally pulled the trigger on a professional doggy blow dryer. That thing is life changing!! Lovebug Doxies are sporting that brazillian blowout look, strutting their stuff, smellin good. Removing dead coat was a breeze with the help of that blow dryer, so I expect less shedding going forward, win win.

I am often asked about the level of grooming needed for long hairs. I’m no pro groomer. I keep things super simple. Bath once a month or as needed if we’ve got seasonal rain/mud. As the coat drys out I’ll do a quick brushing with special attention paid to the back of their ears. Sometimes they’ll get a little tangle behind the ear so I’ll snip a matt if needed. Otherwise I trim very little, pretty much just some foot fuzz so I can better see their nails. Once dry I rub a few drops of argon oil into the coat for condition and shine.

It’s important to keep up on their nail trims because long nails create foot pain. Nobody wants that. If your Doxie does alot of walks on the sidewalk or pavement you may find that they don’t need trimmed that often. Traveling on the coarse surface grinds them down. My pack has a cement patio in their play yard so during the summer we do less frequent nail trims. I expose my pups to nail trims at just a few weeks old. This means most of the pack is well adjusted to them, but there are just some dogs that are never fans of that process.
