Whelping Kit

17 years into my career I have whelped around 60 litters, most of which were Dachshunds. Along the way I’ve learned what tools & skills are must haves. I’ve picked up life saving techniques and seen some loss. I’ve had many fast easy labors that required zero assistance, but I’ve also figured out how to tell that things just aren’t going well. Sometimes it’s a team effort as I help maneuver stuck pups while mom pushes, and when things don’t work out I’ve paid the whooping bill for an emergency c-section to complete the safest delivery possible. Although thankfully only 3 of those in all my years! There have been many all nighters, infact I feel like most pups are born over night 😅.

It is an exciting and rewarding job, but can be heart breaking and exhausting. If you are considering breeding, even one time, I suggest serious research prior to taking the plunge.

Here is a handy list of supplies I keep on hand for every delivery. These products are all must haves, along with…

  • pen/paper for record keeping

  • scissors for cutting cords if needed

  • old towels/blankets for nesting

  • suitable containment/whelping box
